Coeliac friendly eateries in Bayside Melbourne

If there’s salt in the air, sea spray in your hair, the following gluten free fare is near to your lair …

Grazery 144 Balcombe Rd, Mentone VIC 3194

This eatery makes healthy eating seem cool and SO delicious. It’s taking simple healthy ingredients and with a bit of flavour making them extremely appealing. Think grilled lean meats with herbs, flavoursome salads, roasted and mashed vegetables and zesty dressings and how can one forget their sweet potato fries (OK so these aren’t super healthy but YUMMMM). You can get any combination of these ingredients in a bowl, a wrap or as a salad. The only gluten on site is in their gluten wraps but they are good with CC and GF wraps are available too. My tip: a half chicken bowl with sweet potato wedges, the salad of the season, pesto and apple cider vinegar. It’s fast food but without the guilt – dine in or takeaway.

Indian Palace 131 Church St Brighton

The lovely staff at Indian palace are always happy to help a coeliac (or any other dietary requirement for that matter). They are well informed and the food is delicious. Start with a dosa and follow up with a GF butter chicken but be sure to bring your appetite – the portions are very generous.

1/140 Ormond Rd, Elwood VIC 3184

This is one of the places to be seen at the moment, so as a result, be prepared to wait, or simply squish up on a small table. The smoothies are the calling card; mason jars, pretty decorations and packed to the brim with superfoods. Personally I think $14 for a smoothie regardless of the ingredients is outrageous but the people keep coming, so good on them for finding a niche. The reason I go there is for the numerous gluten free options of course! Avocado smash on quinoa toast, raw pizza on a seeded base, and the variety of raw cheesecakes on display in the cabinet. A bit pricey, but also yummy and trendy. Worth a visit if you have some coin to spare.

Seaview Fish and Chips 339 Balcombe Rd, Beaumaris VIC 3193

The lovely Greek family at Seaview actually understand the issues of cross contamination, and it's a refreshing change. Bar Monday and Friday, any night of the week you can head down for your fish and chip fix worry free, in their dedicated gluten free fryer. The team not only understands cross contamination but they put out without fail, crispy, tasty battered fish, delicious chips and even potato cakes for our indulgence. The servings are enormous and cheap considering the usual gluten free surcharge we cop. On those summer evenings, this is the place to stop, especially as the beach is around the corner to complete that summer night fantasy.

Roti Boti

513 Hampton St, Hampton

Another bayside Indian restaurant that are happy to make any of their curries gluten free - a chat with the staff explaining you have coeliac disease is all it takes. I've eaten here about 10 times and have had a pleasant experience, tasty food and no reaction every time.
