After four months of travelling around Europe, I was wandering the streets of Madrid hungry, and frankly, dreading the thought of another rice cake.
I'd been to London and found loads of options ... been hungry through Germany, Budapest and France ... eat like a queen in Italy ... and then been forced back to the daily staple of rice cakes in Madrid.
It was amidst this train of thought, I was suddenly disrupted by an incredible sight - the words gluten free. It was the first time I'd seen these sacred words in my three days in Madrid and I was drawn like a magnet down the street towards this promising sign.
A little closer and I realised this sign held something better than I could have ever imagined. A 100% GF bakery, right in the heart of Madrid.
Bread, cakes, pastries, friendly staff who could speak English - a guarantee that everything was coeliac safe. (And after a good stalk on Instagram, it's clear they've expanded to a full cafe menu too!)
Needless to say, I visited Celicioso every day for my remaining week in Madrid. I tried cakes, pastries, sandwiches, I drank tea and coffee, I caught up on emails, I skyped friends to show off my cake of the day - it became my second home (with an incredible in-house chef).
I couldn't recommend this bakery more highly - it was a saviour! I even stocked up on bread, cookies and sandwiches to take on my next stint to Salamanca - which came in handy until I found Salamanca's gluten free gems.
In case you're not convinced to book your hotel in accordance to its location to this bakery, I'll let the photos seal the deal ...
